The Apprentice Training Program

 

The Apprentice Training Program is a program where the apprentice is given the opportunity to earn while learning a trade. The Apprentice receives school training, as well as on-the-job training, for four years before graduating and becoming a Journeyperson.

Apprentices are required to attend school one week every three months, in a daytime program, and are paid by their contractor/employer while they are attending school.

General Requirements

 

  • Must have a valid Driver’s license and have a reliable means of transportation
  • Must pass a drug screening
  • Must take a Written Mechanical Aptitude Examination (Part 1 – Computation, Part 2 – Concepts and Application, Part 3- Mechanical Reasoning, Part 4 – Space Relations)
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, etc)
  • Must be able to get to work in any of the eight counties in Local 25’s jurisdictions; Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, and Union Counties
  • Must be able to endure the physical demands of the construction industry
  • Must be available to work overtime, evenings, and weekends if required
  • Must be able to be on your feet for 8 hours every day
  • Must be able to lift at least 40 LBS
  • Must be able to climb at least an 8-foot ladder
  • Must be willing to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) specifically hard hat, safety gloves, safety glasses, ear protections, work boots, neon colored clothing, but no limited to these items
  • Must be able to obtain SWAC and TWIC cards
  • Must submit W-2 forms from past and present employers (5 years)
  • Must submit Official High School Transcripts, GED and any other school transcripts or certifications (trade school, college, welding, etc)

Important Notes
  1. All apprentice day school classes are held at the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union No. 25 Training Center, 440 Barell Avenue, Carlstadt, NJ. Classes are from 6:30 AM until 3:00 PM.

 

  1. You must contact the JATC if you are going to be late or absent from school – the number is (201) 507-0333, Ext. 127 or email dbracero@smw25.org.

 

  1. Apprentice School Tuition is $75.00 per semester and due on the first day you are in school (you must pay online in Union Fusion.)

 

  1. All apprentices are required to bring to class all required textbooks, calculators and drafting equipment.
  1. Construction type work boots are to be worn at all times while you are in the Training Center in Carlstadt, NJ.

 

  1. Quarterly Apprentice Meetings start at 4:30 PM and are held at the Training Center in Carlstadt, NJ.

 

  1. Monthly Union Meetings start at 5:00 PM and are held at the Kenilworth Veterans Center in Kenilworth, NJ.
